The $11.- adventure

For quite a while I have been looking for an exhibition venue that will not hesitate to charge an entrance fee for a show of mine. The reason for this offbeat request: For any artistic/cultural (what is that?) event we willingly and evidently buy entry tickets. For some reason this common and logical custom of paying for an artist’s effort has evaded the visual arts (museums excluded).

I invest a lot of toil and money in my art and understand that visiting of art lovers in exhibitions bestows certain benefits on them. I took the liberty of checking if there is a real need to those fans (including a number of personal friends that used to frequent my shows until today) in going into the trouble of traveling to a gallery for… What for?

The first of the Mohicans

Ms. Irit Dalal Zalayet, owner of The ZalayetArt, house for art in Tel Aviv, a charming and modest lady – agreed to delve into the adventure with me and strictly refused to share the income; she also did not charge a penny for letting me go berserk on her walls and stay there for the duration of 3 weeks. Her attitude, support and lending a hand and ear during the whole process, before and after, deserve the utmost thanks and appreciation.

Look for your friends

It took what it took to prepare the exhibition. The entry fee (40.-IS) included a choice of one of 7 booklets prepared as “catalogues” for the site-specific installation. The little books bare my illustrated thoughts/meditation on the not so happy situation in our small country, in a quite humoristic, self-mocking spirit.

How not to fall includes “Practical advice to the user” on what pits one should avoid and how to embetter one’s lives in view of the challenging conditions.

Rather stormy correspondence did Irit undergo in the social media, on the issue of shamelessly asking people to pay for somebody else’s effort. None of the debaters showed up at the exhibition.

Summary: 33 persons did visit the gallery (some even bought additional books on top of the compulsory one). The outstanding one of the brave group that risked the breaking of a saving plan :) is doubtlessly a so called friend who declared that he will not pay to enter, as he already bought (voluntarily) a different book of mine in an exhibition that has just ended… The embarrassing situation (other visitors were present) did not let Irit show him the door.

הרפתקת ה-40 שקל – זה 9 וחצי ביורו

מזה זמן אני מנסה למצוא בעל גלריה או אולם תצוגה אחר שיהיה מוכן לגבות דמי כניסה עבור תערוכה שלי.

הסיבה לבקשה הבלתי מקובלת הזו: עבור כל אירוע אמנות/תרבות [מה זה?] נדרשים ומשולמים דמי כניסה כדבר המובן מאליו. משום מה ה"מנהג" ההגיוני הזה של תשלום עבור עבודת האמן פסח על האמנות הפלסטית (יוצאות מן הכלל הן גלריות הנקראות מוזיאונים). בהשקיעי עמל וכסף רבים בעבודתי ובהביני שביקורם של חובבי אמנות בתערוכות מעניק להם "ניקוד" מסויים מבחינות שונות, התעקשתי לבדוק אם יש צורך אמיתי לחובבים הנ"ל (הכוללים גם את חבריי האישיים שנהגו לבקר עד עתה בתערוכותיי) בטירחה של הנדידה עד לגלריה ואפילו בתשלום, כדי... כדי מה?

המוהיקנית הראשונה

עירית דלל זלאיט, בעלת הגלריה זלאיטארט הבית לאמנות בשיכון דן בתל אביב, אישה צנועה ומקסימה ביותר – הסכימה להכנס איתי להרפתקה וסרבה בכל תוקף להתחלק בהכנסות. גם לא גבתה כל תשלום שהוא על העמדת הגלריה למשך 3 שבועות למימוש שגיונותיי. התייחסותה, תמיכתה ואוזנה הקשבת במשך כל התהליך של לפני ואחרי ראויים לכל הערכה ושבח אפשריים.

חפש את החברים  שלך:

עמלתי כמה שעמלתי על הכנת התערוכה ובדמי הכניסה שנקבעו על 40 שקל יהודיים כללתי גם אחד (לבחירת המבקר) מ-7 ספרונים במהדורה מצומצמת שהוצאתי  לאור לקראת המאורע. בספרונים שיסיתי את מחשבותיי/הגיגיי והם נכתבו ואויירו כ"קטלוגים" למיצב צמוד המצב שהותאם לחלל הגלריה. תוכנו רווי תלונות/רטינות על מצבנו העגום בארצנו הקטנטונת, ברוח הומוריסטית למדי. המיצב איך לא ליפול כשמו כן הוא: מציג "עצות שימושיות למשתמש" מאלו מרעין בישין להימנע ואיך לשכלל את חייו אל מול הנתונים המאתגרים  של החיים. בהתכתבויות סוערות ברשתות החברתיות (ספר הַפָּנים...) טרום-פתיחה, התגוששה עירית (אני לא מחובר) עם מכותביה בנושא של עזות הפנים לבקש ממישהו לשלם על מאמציו של מישהו אחר. איש מהם לא הופיע בתערוכה.

הסיכום המשמח והבלתי צפוי בהחלט: 33 אישה ואיש ביקרו בתערוכה (יש כאלה שקנו ספרים נוספים מעבר לנדרש!). היוצא מן הכלל בחבורה של הנועזים, ששברו קופות חיסכון כדי לעמוד בנטל J הוא "ידיד" משכבר הימים שהגדיל לעשות ובא לתערוכה מצוייד בספר שרכש, בהתנדבות, בתערוכתי המשותפת עם יעל לב בגלריית השלום בגבעת חביבה והצהיר שהוא חבר שלי ולא ישלם דמי כניסה כי כבר רכש ספר (שונה כמובן)... לעירית לא היה לב לגרש אותו במצב המביך, שבו נכחו עוד אנשים.
