Art & Nonsense
Warum? = Why?
The
ultimate solution to the eternal question:
A straight
Banana --
Explanation:
During my childhood, I often heard my mother (a genuine Yekke =
German Jew, immigrating to Palestine, then a British mandate) sing: "Why, oh
why, is the banana crooked?", the answer being: "Had it been straight, it
would be a banana no more".
So here we face a straight forward solution; no?
The city of Zűrich
has honoured me with a commission of an outdoor sculpture to stand on the
Rosengarten Plaza, overlooking one
of Switzerland's most driven roads.
Tian Lutz, the curator of this
adventure, generously assisted me and hung the piece in its venue. None of
us has foreseen the following happenings.
The bright yellow banana hardly lasted 24 hours in its original place. On
Saturday night, June 27, 2015 it was severely damaged -- the pictures tell
the story.

General view of the Rosengarten Plaza, while The straight
Banana still stood erect. June 26, 2015
Less than 24 hours after installation, unknown individuals went into a lot of
trouble changing its position
and damaging the sculpture.
Following, a few photos of the
piece, taken during installation
The figure is constructed of reinforced and lacquered Papier-mâché,
strongly attached to
the iron structure supporting it. Size: 4 meters long, diameter 30 to 80 cm.
The iron structure is part of a former bridge over the river Sihl.
Here, my reply to the vandalizers.
The former photo was taken under bad light conditions...
