As many an Ex Libris fan have defined this lovely art in
length.
I will cite what one of the numerous sites about the topic
namely http://www.fisae.org/ has written:
Ex-libris or 'bookplates' are small prints or labels designed
to be pasted into books (often on the inside front cover) to indicate their owner.
Today, ex-libris are conceived and created for
real use in libraries,
but are often also small-format art prints, collected world-wide.
Bookplates typically bear a name, motto, coat-of-arms, badge, or any
motif that relates to the owner of the book, or is requested by him
from the artist. The name of the owner usually follows an
inscription such as "from the books of . . . " or "from the library
of . . . ", or in Latin, Ex Libris ....all-format art prints, collected
world-wide.
